Galway Bay fm newsroom - County planners have refused planning permission for the extension of Harrington's Quarry in Claregalway.
The Quarry sought to expand their operations across a further 4.35 hectares of land adjacent to their existing operations north of Claregalway.
The plans called for the concrete and quarry stone company to begin rock extraction by means of blasting, with material transported to the existing processing plant, with occasional processing taking place at the application site using a mobile plant.
The applicants had sought a five year permission for the expansion in the townland of Ardgaineen.
The plans were the subject of a number of public submissions against the expansion, with one local resident claiming blasting at the existing site has cracked the plaster at his home.
In refusing the application, county planners highlighted that local transport links are unsuitable to support the expansion and that further blasting would affect the health and safety of the surrounding area.
