Galway Bay fm newsroom - A minute silence has been observed at Galway County Council today for all those who died at the Tuam mother and baby home, and for all those with a personal connection to the home.
The Commission of Investigation confirmed the discovery of a significant number of childrens’ remains earlier this month during test excavations underway near the site since October.
County Cathaoirleach Michael Connolly said it’s a poignant time to reflect following Mother’s Day.
He said the local authority will continue to work with all relevant parties and approach the issues with sensitivity and compassion.
He added that he understands there are varying views concerning the future of the site and the council is committed to facilitating a consultation process.
A minute silence was also observed following the passing of former Bishop Eamon Casey who was described by Loughrea area councilor Michael Fahy as ‘a true Christian and a man of the people’.
Silences were also marked for the members of the coastguard who died following a rescue mission off the West coast, and for the former Northern Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness who died following a short illness last week.
The monthly meeting continues at County Hall.
