Galway Bay fm newsroom - County councillors have backed a call for Galway harbour to be upgraded to Tier 2 status.
The proposal was led by Loughrea area Fine Gael councillor Jimmy McClearn following a representation to the local authority by the Northern and Western Regional Assembly.
Connemara area councillor Joe Folan said he had reservations about the depths of Galway docks.
He said Rossaveal should be developed as a matter of priority.
Fellow Connemara area councillor Tomás O'Curraoin said works at the fishing harbour in Rossaveal are long awaited.
He said there were concerns last Autumn that pontoons for leisure vessels were taking up space and said that Rossaveal's focus should be on fisheries.
Councillor McClearn said a tier 2 port is badly needed for the entire north-west region - and Galway Docks has huge potential.
