County councillor disappointed over executive's submission on rail review

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A Tuam area councillor has highlighted her disappointment after the county council executive made a submission to the rail review.

Councillor Karey McHugh argues the submission was made without adequate consultation with elected members.

The rail review is an online survey, led by Iarnród Éireann, to determine if the proposed extension of the rail line from Athenry to Tuam and from Tuam to Claremorris - known as the Western Rail Corridor - represents value for money.

Those in favour of the extension argue it will take cars off the road and encourage commuters to use public transport.

Meanwhile, campaigners against the corridor argue it should be replaced with a greenway to boost tourism in the region.

County councillors received an email yesterday informing them a submission was made on their behalf in favour of reopening the Western Rail Corridor.

Independent councillor Karey McHugh who supports the greenway, says news of the submission came like "a bolt completely out of the blue".

Councillor McHugh argues the executive has undermined the democratic process.

Meanwhile, at a meeting at county hall this week, councillors were informed an application for funding for the Tuam Athenry Greenway was refused.

Councillors were told the number of applications well exceeded available funds so the Department prioritised developments that were ready to commence. For more on this story tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour...
