County council says no records of human remains during 1970s construction of homes near Tuam mass grave site

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway County Council says there is no record to indicate the discovery of human remains during the 1970's construction of houses adjacent to the Tuam mother and baby home mass grave site.

The local authority also insists that there are no records of any such discovery during the subsequent development of a playground.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the council says it has reviewed all relevant files connected with the development of houses and a playground, in the vicinity of the site.

The local authority says all relevant files and records have been made available to the Commission.

Officials add that the council is committed to facilitating an appropriate consultation process with the local community, about the future of the site.

The timeline for the consultation process will be influenced by the continuing work of the Commission, the statutory role of the Coroner and the potential for the involvement by other authorities.

The Mother & Baby Homes Commission of Investigation confirmed the presence of human remains last Friday, following a test excavation on the site of the former Bons Secours institution.
