County council passes motion to tackle illegal parking of caravans

Galway Bay fm newsroom  - Galway County Council has passed a motion aimed at tackling the illegal parking of caravans and camper vans around the county.

The motion, proposed by Councillor Gerry Finnerty, calls for the granting of greater power to the local authority to seize such vehicles or dwellings - as well as the power to destroy them if they go unclaimed.

Councillor Finnerty says the illegal encampment at the roundabout off the M18 in Gort is extremely dangerous and action is needed.

Director of Services, Jim Cullen says the council is currently restricted in respect of the powers it has to move caravans on.

Following the motion, a letter will now be sent to the Departments of Transport and Justice demanding the provision of greater powers.

Fianna Fail Councillor Finnerty says under current laws, even if they are seized, caravans and camper vans have to be carefully stored indefinitely
