Galway Bay fm newsroom - A new tenancy sustainment strategy has been approved by Galway County Council.
The agreement aims to minimise tenancy breakdown and promote stable and sustainable communities.
Under the strategy, a number of regional clinics will be provided in Carraroe, Ballinasloe, Clifden, County Hall, Loughrea and Tuam.
Following the presentation of the new strategy at this week's meeting, Loughrea area councillor Jimmy McClearn was one of many to raise concerns over tenants who disrespect local authority houses.
He said taxpayers in Galway would be appalled if they knew the level of damage at local authority houses by some tenants.
He said the tone of an entire estate can be brought down by one bad tenant.
Acting Director of Services Michael Owens said a very small number of tenancies are problematic and spot checks are being carried out.
He said there are four housing liaison officers in the county supported by a team of social workers.
The meeting also heard that all applicants are subject to Garda checks with additional background checks from other local authorities and State agencies.
The strategy was proposed by Loughrea area Independent councillor Michael Fahy and seconded by Tuam area councillor Tom McHugh.
