Galway Bay fm newsroom - County Councillors have given the go-ahead for a major redevelopment of Gilmartin Road in Tuam.
The Part 8 planning documents for the area, which has been described as an 'eyesore,' came before councillors at County Hall last evening.
The plans are for the demolition of 30 existing houses and the construction of 40 new 2 and 3-bed homes.
It'll also involve the renovation of 21 council-owned houses at Gilmartin Road and St Enda's Avenue.
Parts of Gilmartin Road have become dilapidated in recent years, and extensive illegal dumping has also been taking place in the locality.
A number of submissions from local residents outlined concerns over the boundary wall which is proposed to be built between the new homes and the existing homes.
Tuam area councillor Tom McHugh proposed that the plans be accepted on the condition that local residents are given an input into the height of the proposed boundary walls.
He says the redeveloped area will be a great addition to the town.
