Galway County Councillors were in agreement at their meeting last evening that every effort possible would be made to provide food, shelter, support and facilities.

Councillor Alastair McKinstry who initiated the debate last evening said that the number of people from the Ukraine fleeing the war and coming to Ireland could reach 100,000.

If that prediction proves right, then approximately 3,500 of them could possibly come to Galway, Councillor McKinstry stated.

Alastair McKinstry said that the immediate need for housing arose and that the planning laws might need to be changed in this emergency. He also stated that one or two schools may need to be built.

Some Councillors suggested that modular homes may be part of the housing solution in the immediate term

Councillor James Charity said that the direct provision system would be a matter of concern in the longer term and that a 'them and us' approach must be avoided as regards services.

Councillor Shelly Herterich-Quinn said that the Ukranian people should be located in areas where ancillary services were available close by.

Council CEO Jim Cullen said it is a desperate situation and that certain strategies may come from national level.
