Galway Bay fm newsroom - A city councillor says the Government needs to immediately look at an emergency parental leave payment for those affected by the extended closure of schools.

Councillor Alan Cheevers says many parents are stressed and looking at cutting their hours - despite the fact many cannot afford it due to financial obligations.
It's as the Government has announced that all schools are to remain closed for January, with the exception of leaving cert students.

The Government has also advised that special education should remain open with protections in place.
Fianna Fail Councillor Cheevers says supports need to be put in place for working parents who will have no choice but to stay at home.
