Council to consider major safety works at Tubber Road in Gort

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The County Council has committed to investigating a series of possible road safety measures at the Tubber Road in Gort.

The busy route, which is home to Gort GAA pitch and the livestock mart is used by hundreds of people each week.

A deputation, made up of representatives of the local GAA, mart and residential community, made a presentation to Loughrea district councillors this week.

The group is concerned about the safety of the hundreds of people who attend the mart and GAA matches on the road due to limited parking and a lack of footpaths and lighting.

Some signage has been installed at the location, but there's still widespread concern about the speed of traffic on the route, which runs parallel to the M18 motorway.

Councillors have given broad support to the group, and have committed to donating some of their 'Notice of Motion' money to the cause if feasible.

Councillor Joe Byrne has also called on the local authority to consider implementing safety works at the location under the CLAR funding scheme, and the Community Involvement Scheme.

However, the council executive has pointed out that it only has 212 thousand euro available in CLAR funding for the entire county, and the CIS funding is also in high demand.

The council has been urged to provide estimated costings for the required works.
