Galway Bay fm newsroom - The county council has approved plans for a 100 megawatt battery energy storage facility in Athenry.
Engie Developments Limited has been granted 10 year planning permission for the development at Barrettspark.
The plan for the facility sets out to provide energy services to the national grid and would delivered in four phases.
The development will involve the construction and operation of up to 34 metal containers to store up to 100 megawatts in sealed battery cells.
The county council has granted planning permission with 7 conditions attached.
One condition requires a traffic management plan for the construction phase to be submitted to the council for approval before work begins.
