There will be full excavation and the basic rock will be the foundation.

The contract for the work has been awarded to Clare Civil Engineering - a company that was set up in Co Clare but now has head offices in Dublin.

Clare Civil Engineering has previously carried out road schemes for Transport Infrastructure Ireland which is the national authority for roads.

A spokesperson for Galway County Council said that the actual road construction will begin early in the New Year.

In the meantime, there will be preparations such as setting up a works yard in the Maam Cross area.

Traffic management plans are also being put in place and the work will go on for 18 months.
