Continued drop in Covid-19 patients at Galway hospitals

Galway Bay fm newsroom - There's been a further drop in the number of Covid-19 patients at Galway's public hospitals.

There are 13 patients with the virus at UHG - that's unchanged from yesterday, but still represents a considerable drop on the figure reported on Monday.

5 people remain in ICU at the city hospital, unchanged from yesterday.

Meanwhile there are now two Covid-19 patients at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe - a drop of two patients since yesterday - and there are no virus patients in ICU.

Nationally, 206 people are in hospital with the virus, of whom 33 are being treated in ICU.

It comes as a group representing doctors says Ireland's under-resourced healthcare system led to stricter lockdowns during the pandemic.

The Irish Medical Organisation is calling for the HSE to recruit more doctors and bring in more hospital beds.

Public Health doctor and President of the IMO, Dr Ina Kelly, says strict lockdowns were required due to a lack of capacity in our hospitals.
