The issue was raised by Councillor John Connolly at this week's meeting of the Regional Health Forum West.

He was advised there are over 260 people in Galway-Roscommon waiting for an initial appointment; while 80 people are awaiting treatment.

Saolta bosses admitted they are not happy with the waiting lists; but gave an assurance that all urgent cases are being seen.

It was revealed that for routine referrals to psychology services, the waiting time can be up to a year for those seeking an initial appointment.

Saolta officials also noted ongoing recruitment difficulties, and said approval has been secured for supporting psychology services to help ease pressure on the waiting lists.

Councillor John Connolly says temporary vacancies are a significant problem:

95.8 MHz Clifden & West Connemara
97.4 MHz South Connemara & Aran Islands
96.8 MHz County Galway
97.4 MHz East Galway
