This week's plenary meeting at County Hall heard Galway County Council has purchased 7.2 acres of land at Droim na Gaoithe at a cost of over €2.9 million.

The site is located close to Claregalway Corporate Park, with direct access onto the R381 and the L7110.

Director of Services Michael Owens said the next action will involve appointing a design team and it's hoped construction onsite would begin in 2022 subject to stage and statutory approval.

Local Independent councillor Jim Cuddy asked officals why local representatives were not notified and said there is an urgent need for a playground and cemetery in Claregalway, with this site ideally suited.

Michael Owens told the meeting the process only concluded last Wednesday and the model for the affordability criteria will be set out by the department.

Councillor Cuddy argued there is no afforable scheme at the moment and the plan needs to be clarified - to hear more, tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour...
