Galway Bay fm newsroom - There are growing concerns over the impact of South Galway flood alleviation works on the world famous Clarinbridge Oyster.
Producers say siltation - the deposit of soil, silt and other materials being carried by rivers and streams from inland - is having a serious effect on the oyster beds.
The main fishery is centered along the coast at the mouth of the Clarin River, and spans some 1000 acres.
Oyster farmers say the transfer of large volumes of flood water from Sliabh Aughty through South Galway to the sea could be devastating.
The County Council has issued an assurance that the consultants hired to undertake the flood works will be made aware of the concerns, and will work with concerned parties to protect the industry.
