Colm Keaveney loses out in bid for senate seat

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Fianna Fail’s Colm Keaveney has lost out in his bid to become a senator.

The former Galway East TD, who was the only Fianna Fail TD in the country to lose his Dail seat, had hoped to win a place in the Seanad.

However last night he was eliminated during the count for the Labour vocational panel.

The only other Galway contender for this panel, outgoing Independent Senator Gerard Craughwell, was successful in retaining his seat.

Yesterday another outgoing Galway senator, Sinn Fein’s Trevor O Clochartaigh of Carraroe, was elected to the Agricultural panel.

Meanwhile, outgoing senator and Ahascragh native Ronan Mullen has topped the poll in the Seanad election on the National University of Ireland panel.

After the first count, former Aer Arann chairman Pádraig Ó Céidigh was in third place followed by Alice Mary Higgins, daughter of the president.

Counting for the three seat panel will resume within the hour.
