Claims housing development in Athenry being “held to ransom”

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There’s a call for “radical” solutions to be considered to the lack of wastewater treatment facilities in Athenry.

Councillor Shelley Herterich Quinn told a meeting of the Athenry-Oranmore municipal district that very little is being built in the town due to lack of capacity.

She said it’s an absolutely ludicrous situation and it now may be time to consider a widespread return to temporary wastewater treatment plants.

Otherwise, she warned, there will hardly be a house built in the next three to four years.

Earlier this year, Irish Water confirmed it is to extend the sewage pipe network as part of a major project – however, this is not set to be delivered until 2024.

Councillor Herterich Quinn believes it cannot wait and Athenry is being “held to ransom”.
