Galway Bay fm newsroom - Lidl Ireland has been issued with a refusal decision by city planners in its latest bid to bring a foodstore to the Westside.
The German retailer had hoped to develop a store at the former Arch Motors premises at Seamus Quirke Road.
The plan had set out to develop a local retailing supermarket with ancillary off-license sales as well as a retail unit.
This would have involved the demolition of a portion of the existing two storey Arch Motors premises - with the adjoining Monaghan's Westside Shop and Filling Station remaining in situ.
There would also be a change of use of a portion of the Arch Motors premises to shop use.
There would also be revisions to the existing vehicular and pedestrian access points, the existing filling station forecourt layout and the right turn lane on Seamus Quirke Road.
Last November, An Bord Pleanála rejected a plan led by Lidl to build a discount foodstore at the site.
City planners have now refused permission for the latest application.
Planners state the development on Community Infrastructure zoned lands located outside of the district centre would be contrary to the zoning objective of the area.
