Galway Bay fm newsroom - City officials are standing by plans to implement lane closures in the city for all of August despite representations by the Mayor and several councillors.

The closures between Eyre Square and Bohermore are to facilitate works by Irish Water to lay down a new water main.

The Chief Executive and staff at Galway City Council have received queries from Mayor Mike Cubbard and several local councillors regarding the planned programme of works.

There are concerns that the closures will greatly impact traffic flow through the city during what is a peak time for tourism.

However, in a statement to Galway Bay fm news, officials have said the lane closures will not coincide with the busy festival period of the Galway International Arts Festival and Race Week.

They say the works, which are part of the water conservation programme, are necessary and they are expected to be complete before children return to school.

The lane closures will be implemented between 9am and 6pm from Monday fortnight, the 5th of August until Friday, the 6th of September.
