City officials to meet with Traveller representatives over Cúl Trá evictions

Galway Bay fm newsroom - City officials will meet with Traveller representatives in the coming days over outstanding eviction notices at the Cúl Trá halting site in Salthill.

10 Traveller families received notice to quit the site by early June, but remain in their accommodation.

There are up to 16 families living at the Cúl Trá site, which was originally build for six.

The city council say it has serious health and safety concerns.

Galway Traveller Movement held a protest at the site last month, followed by a demonstration at a city council meeting a few weeks later.

The City Council says it'll meet with Traveller representatives in the coming days to discuss the ongoing situation.

Meanwhile, the council and Gardaí say they were not notified about an alleged illegal fire at the site in recent days.

City Councillor Noel Larkin described the alleged burning of rubbish as ‘downright stupid’ given the serious overcrowding concerns at the location.
