Galway Bay fm newsroom - The city council's LED upgrade programme has achieved a 95% completion rate.
A meeting of the city council last evening heard the project is eight months ahead of the original programme schedule.
Galway city council has over 9,500 public lights in the city environs.
Prior to the upgrade which began in 2020, over 80% of these were high energy sodium lanterns.
With a 95% completion rate across the city, there is now just non-standard lanterns remaining.
Works completed to date have cost over €3 million, with the final estimated project costed ar €3.4 million.
This has resulted in an average 64% energy saving estimated at €340 thousand per year.
It also represents a CO2 saving of 975 tonnes per year.
The LED upgrade has also resulted in significant savings on maintenance with a reduction of almost €29 thousand since 2020.
