Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway City council has voted to revoke the resolution of the 23rd May 2005 which gave the freedom of city to Aung San Suu Kyi
The vote followed recent protests at City Hall, the most recent one being today, calling for the honour to be removed
At today's meeting the motion to remove the honour was proposed by Mayor Niall McNelis and seconded by Cllr Billy Cameron
It was passed by 13 votes in favour, 2 councillors abstained and 3 were absent.
While the honour was bestowed in 2005 Aung San Suu Kyi's leadership role since 2016 has been called into question
This is due to continuing abuses in Myanmar and nearby border areas where thousands of Rohingya Muslims have been displaced from Myanmar into neighbouring Bangladesh due to an army crackdown
