Galway Bay fm newsroom - Councillors have voted to recommend the introduction of the new ‘Open Library’ system in the city on a trial basis.
The system was the subject of lengthy debate at City Hall last evening where it was described by Independent Councillor Mike Cubbard as a faceless, staffless service that is not good for the community.
His concerns focused on possible anti-social behaviour, intimidation, tail-gating and the monitoring of CCTV.
The meeting was addressed by County Librarian Peter Rabbitte who assured members that there will be no reduction in staff due to the changes which are mainly focused on extending access.
He was accompanied by Mary Stuart, County Librarian for Offaly where ‘Open Library’ is successfully operating in Tullamore and Banagher.
She told members the self service technology has led to an increased membership of two thousand users, with very little issues with anti-social behaviour.
Fine Gael Councillor Pearce Flannery passed a proposal that the ‘Open Library’ is recommended for introduction on a 12 month pilot basis at libraries within the city.
He argued it’s a better utility for the public with increased access and no threat to jobs.
