Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway city councillors have unanimously rejected a proposal from management for a 7.5% increase in local property tax.
The executive presented a report on LPT at the September plenary meeting at City Hall last evening.
The increase would have yielded an additional €620,000 to the city's financial intake in 2020.
Management stated this increase would amount to an additional charge of no more than 38 cents per week for most households.
Most councillors spoke against the proposed increase with councillor Colette Connolly and others pointing out that 20% of the city's property tax went directly to central government.
However, councillor Michael Crowe said the proposed increase was worth looking at.
He stated that many councillors were demanding more services and that the money had to come from somewhere.
Councillor Peter Keane re-echoed those sentiments but said he would be reluctant to support an increase in the charges.
Councillor Pauline O' Reilly proposed that the Local Property Tax would not be increased.
This was seconded by councillor Donal Lyons and unanimously supported by all 18 members.
