There are fresh calls for greater accountability on how public funding invested in Galway 2020 was spent.

City Councillor Alan Cheevers has written to the Mayor of Galway, urging her to request that the Chairperson and Chief Executive of Galway 2020 appear before council members.

He argues vast amounts of taxpayer funds were invested in the project and complete transparency is needed - such as how much was spent on a cancelled opening ceremony at Southpark.

Councillor Cheevers also says there are unanswered questions over how much was paid out following the departure of some senior staff members.

Galway 2020 was initially projected to be 50 percent supported by public funding - but this ultimately rose to almost 90 percent, according to a recent Government report.

Councillor Cheevers says it's past time to get the real cost of the project.
