Galway Bay fm newsroom - A city councillor is proposing that gardaí take over the management of traffic on the east side of the city at peak times.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Peter Keane says the local authorities and business interests should cover the cost of overtime for the gardaí involved.
The suggestions comes as traffic in and out of the city has experienced severe delays in recent weeks.
There have been reports of it taking motorists up to 90 mins to move 100 yards while trying to exit Parkmore Business Park at peak time.
Some of the congestion is thought to be attributed to the opening of the new M17 motorway which is now filtering more traffic into the Briarhill junction.
Councillor Peter Keane told Keith Finnegan that short-term immediate solutions are needed now.
However, Galway gardaí say they've not been told of any suggestion to put their members on traffic duty and therefore are not in a position to comment.
Councillor Keane says that the cost of providing gardaí on traffic duty at peak times should be covered by all vested interests.
