City Councillor calls for urgent action on rising rental costs

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A local councillor is calling for urgent action to address rising rental prices in Galway city.

City East Councillor Owen Hanley was speaking in reaction to the Residential Tenancies Board's Q3 report, which shows that city rents have increased by 11.6 percent in the last quarter.

Rents in Galway have increased by 8.3 percent year on year, with the average rent in Galway city now standing at 1252 euro per month.

The city recorded the second highest average nationwide, in Q 3 of 2019, just behind Dublin.

Galway is one of seven counties where the average rent is now above one thousand euro a month.

Meanwhile, the average rent for a one-bed apartment in Galway is now 877 euro, 1119 euro for a two-bed and 1310 euro for an apartment with three bedrooms or more.

Councillor Hanley says the Government and the City Council need to work together to address the issue.
