Galway Bay fm newsroom - A city councillor has lashed out at the government's suggestion that the public should not be allowed object to Traveller Accommodation.
Independent Noel Larkin says many settled residents object to plans to develop Traveller Specific Accommodation in their area due to concerns it will bring anti-social behaviour, horse roaming, scrap storage and feuding.
He's responding to the Traveller Accommodation Expert Review by the Department of Housing, which made a number of recommendations aimed at ending the deadlock in the deliver of Traveller housing.
Councillor Larkin says instead of stopping objections, the government should set up a task force to examine why people don't want Traveller Specific Accommodation in their areas:
However, Director of the Irish Traveller Movement Bernard Joyce says people objecting without cause are racist.
The report also found Galway City Council did not draw down any funds for Traveller accommodation last year.
Earlier in the summer the local authority was criticised for its alleged inaction on improving sub-standard conditions at Traveller accommodation. For more on this story tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour...
