City Councillor calls for pharmacists and GPs to be given role in vaccination programme

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A city councillor is calling for pharmacists and GPs to be given an immediate role in the COVID-19 vaccination programme.

Fine Gael Councillor Clodagh Higgins has expressed concerns regarding the pace of delivery of the inoculation programme,

It comes as the first injections in Galway have been administered to health staff at UHG and Portiuncula Hospital, with Merlin Park to follow today.

The programme is also set to be rolled-out at a number of nursing homes across the county from next week.

The HSE has confirmed that 180 people have been trained to carry out vaccinations in the community, while a further 1,500 vaccinators are due to become available in the acute hospital system - with the programme to be then rolled out to GP’s and Pharmacies.

Councillor Higgins argues this falls short of the numbers required in a pandemic.

She says a clear solution to speed-up the process here is to allow GPs and pharmacists to administer the vaccine....
