Galway Bay fm newsroom - City Councillor Alan Cheevers is calling for greater parental awareness on children being targeted as "money mules" by criminal gangs.
It comes as there was a total of 700 suspected money mules nationwide last year, with many teenagers recruited at college campuses, schools, sports clubs and online.
Typically, these "money mules" are paid by gangs for the use of their bank accounts to transfer and store money.
Councillor Cheevers raised the issue at this month's meeting of the City Joint Policing Committee, where it was acknowledged that Gardaí are aware of the issue and are monitoring it closely.
Councillor Cheevers believes parents, schools and colleges should be having a conversation with teenagers about the dangers of getting involved in what looks like easy money.
