Galway Bay fm newsroom - A City Councillor is calling on the Government to make it compulsory for new buildings to include changing place toilets for disabled people.
It comes as the Changing Places Ireland campaign sets out to introduce fully accessible toilets in public places such as shopping centres, libraries and sporting arenas across the country.
Changing place facilities differ from regular disabled toilets as they provide 12 square metres of floor space and include a centrally located toilet bowl with space either side and a height-adjustable adult size changing bench.
Currently there are 13 of these facilities across the country but none in Galway.
In December, Fine Gael Councillor Clodagh Higgins put forward a motion for the City Council to undertake a feasibility study to provide for a changing place facility in the city - but she says no progress has been made to date.
Councillor Higgins argues that Ireland needs to follow the UK's lead in making the facilities mandatory.
