City Council warns full force of Storm Brendan yet to hit Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The city council has warned that although Galway has escaped major flooding due to Storm Brendan, the full force of the event has yet to hit.

Some wave overtopping occurred at Salthill and Silverstrand at high tide earlier - while water levels reached the top of the quay walls at the docks and at Spanish Arch in the city.

However, while the threat of flooding has receded for now, strong winds and rain are expected to whip across Galway later this morning and afternoon.

A status orange weather warning - which came into effect at 5am - will remain in place until 9pm.

Flood defences remain in place at Spanish Arch, while the County Council has made sand bags available for collection in Gort, Kinvara, Oranmore, Clarinbridge, Leenane, Roundstone and Oughterard.

Bus Éireann is not serving Salthill today - while motorists are also being advised that the access road to Silverstrand is closed due to debris

A number of schools have closed across the county as a precaution.

A status red marine warning also remains in place with gale force 8 to gale force 10 winds on all Irish coastal waters.

City Council spokesperson Gary McMahon says the worst of Storm Brendan has yet to arrive in Galway - possibly between 11am and midday....
