The motion was submitted by Independent councillor Donal Lyons at the start of the year in response to what he has described as a very dangerous situation at the junction with the Clybaun Road.

In response to councllior Lyons' proposal, the Local Authority said "the signalisation of the Clybaun Road/Shangort Road is currently being considered as part of the Galway Cycle Network Stage 2 Project which will go on non-statutory public consultation in Q1 2021".

At this week's Council meeting, councillor Lyons said the proposed installation cannot wait as increased traffic coming from the Kingston Road direction, Joyces' Supermarket and the Western Distributor Road has led to a number of accidents recently.

This was echoed by councillor John Connolly who expressed his frustration at the delayed roll-out of the Galway Cycle Network and councillor Niall McNelis who said cars are regularly traveling along the Shangort Road at excessive speeds.

The motion was carried unanimously by all councillors at the meeting and the City Manager Brendan McGrath said he would bring the proposal back to the Transport section for consideration.
