The plan which was first presented by the City Council Executive during the summer was defeated at the Local Authority's plenary meeting last evening.

The proposed changes to the speed limits included increasing the maximum speed from 50 to 80 kilometres per hour on the N6 Bothar na dTreabh and extending the 50 kilometre limit on the Letteragh and Ballagh road.

Meanwhile, a speed limit reduction to 30 kilometres per hour was also being sought for areas in the inner city - including the Claddagh, Bohermore and Newcastle.

At this week's meeting, Fine Gael city councillor Eddie Hoare proposed adopting the new speed limits with a review after 12 months and this motion was defeated by 10 votes to eight.

Independent councillor Colette Connolly was one of those who opposed the plan - she argued there was anomalies in the plan that needed to be examined.
