Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway city council has passed a motion to remove the newly installed bike racks at the Dyke Road.
The motion, which was put forward by Fine Gael Councillor Frank Fahy, has called for the immediate removal of the bike racks and pencil bollards, for a safety audit to be carried out and for the local residents to be fully consulted before anymore changes are made to the route.
It comes as the new cycling infrastructure has drawn widespread criticism from local cyclists, motorists and public representatives.
At this week’s local authority meeting, several councillors said they were baffled by the decision to install bike parking in the middle of the road - with Green Party Councillor Martina O’Connor suggesting that the facility had put in the wrong place.
The city chief executive advised councillors to defer voting on the proposal until next week’s meeting - when they could be presented with a report from the Galway City Council Transport section.
Councillor Frank Fahy insisted that the vote take place and it was carried by 14 votes to two, with two absent.
