Galway Bay fm newsroom - The city council has erected signage at three beaches advising people not to swim in the water.
Test results this week have revealed high levels of intestinal enterococci bacteria at Silverstrand, Blackrock, Salthill and Grattan road beaches.
A 'DO NOT SWIM' notice has been posted at Silverstrand, Blackrock and Salthill, while a warning advisory has been posted at Grattan Road.
The council says swimming in these waters with elevated levels of the bacteria may cause illness.
Further testing is being undertaken by the council into the suspected contamination and a further notice will be issued on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Clifden beach still has poor quality bathing water according to a report published today by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Clifden received a 'poor' classification for the third year in a row, while the EPA acknowledges that Ballyloughane beach in the city has made improvements and is now 'sufficient'.
