City Council faces calls to respond to An Taisce report concerning raw sewage at River Corrib and Galway Bay

Galway Bay fm newsroom - There are calls for Galway City Council to respond to an An Taisce study which reported that large quantities of raw sewage are entering the River Corrib and Galway Bay.

The study compiled in Autumn 2020 claims that the equivalent of 35 swimming pools of wastewater are entering the bodies of water in the city each month.

The investigation further claimed the council did not adequately report frequent discharges of wastewater containing untreated sewage as individual incidents to the EPA.

City Councillor John Connolly says the report raises serious questions.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm, Galway city council says a full response will be issued in the coming days following the report.

Galway City Council says it has taken issue with the seven findings of the report and is presently finalising a response to each finding which, it says, will correct the inconsistencies in the report.

The statement adds the report was published by An Taisce in December 2020 without any consultation with Galway City Council or Irish Water.
