Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway city and county councils have secured almost 660 thousand euro to make social housing more energy efficient.
The money's part of government's ongoing retrofitting programme and forms part of its climate action plan which aims to reduce Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions.
Galway city council has been allocated over 322 thousand euro, while the county council has been awarded over 335 thousand euro.
The programme provides funding of up to €22,800 per property for fabric upgrade works to dwellings with solid/hollow block wall construction and includes the provision of heating upgrades such as heat pumps and solar panels.
Yesterday, the Climate Change Advisory Council said Ireland was way off course to hit targets set out under the plan.
Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy says with this latest round of funding, it's up to local authorities to decide which homes need the work.
