Galway Bay fm newsroom -There are calls for the establishment of a full-time Garda post at the former tourism kiosk at Eyre Square.
It follows a recent spate of highly-publicised anti-social behavior recorded across the city, including the launching of fireworks in Eyre Square which left a young woman seriously injured.
Fianna Fail Senator Ollie Crowe says recent suggestions that the public square could be closed at night-time are unacceptable and will not solve the ongoing issues.
He points out these people will simply move elsewhere and cause problems in other parts of the city.
Local Fianna Fail representatives also argue that Galway City Council needs to appoint a park officer to oversee badly-needed general improvements to Eyre Square, such as increased public lighting.
Senator Crowe believes a co-ordinated approach between the local authority and Gardaí is needed.
