Call for national memorial to Savita Halappanavar who died at UHG

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A permanent memorial to Savita Halappanavar is being called for by a delegation who were part of repeal the 8th.

31 year-old Savita died at University Hospital Galway in October 2012 from sepsis, after an abortion was denied on legal grounds.

The delegation is calling for a statue or piece of public art to commemorate Savita and others who died or suffered because of the 8th amendment.

They will hand in a letter to Dublin’s Lord Mayor at lunchtime today.

Banners with Savita’s image will be on display saying ‘Never again’ as the letter is handed over.

Member of ROSA Ireland Ruth Coppinger says a permanent reminder is essential in either Dublin or Galway
