The matter arose at this week's meeting of the Tuam Municipal District.

Councillors at the monthly Tuam Municipal District were informed that the vacancies for two community wardens were currently in the process of being filled, the matter was raised on a discussion about illegal dumping, especially fly tipping, that is happening around Tuam and its environs.

Councillor Joe Sheridan requested that law enforcement should set up ‘man and van’ searches in the Tuam area similar to what was carried out in the vicinity of Galway city recently and which required those transporting waste material to produce a waste permit.

Councillor Pete Roache said that such searches would only yield dividends if carried out late at night and in rural and remote areas where the illegal dumping was happening.

Manager Derek Pender informed the meeting that such ‘man and van’ checkpoints were planned for the area. Councillor Mary Hoade informed the councillors that this was the case and that the checkpoints would happen at a variety of locations and times including late at night.
