A county councillor is calling for an increased Garda presence in Tuam following a spate of burglaries in the area.
Fianna Fáil councillor Colm Keaveney has voiced his concerns at a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee in County Hall.
Councillor Keaveney says he has received many representations from elderly people in the area who he says are living in fear.
The meeting heard arguments that Tuam is particularly at risk from crimes gangs traveling from outside of Galway because of its proximity to the motorway.
Councillor Shelley Herterich Quinn stated residents in Athenry are also at their wits' end following a recent spate of burglaries in the community.
