Galway Bay fm newsroom - An MEP for this region says free range egg producers should be compensated for losses resulting from Avian Flu restrictions.
Independent MEP Marian Harkin says a precedent was set in recent years when poultry producers were compensation for economic losses which arose from a previous outbreak.
It was a government requirement that all free-range poultry be kept indoors while the Avian Flu outbreak persisted.
MEP Harkin said this would result in the loss to producers of the premium associated with the sale of eggs designated as free-range
The free-range designation under EU regulations was removed when hens were kept indoors for 12 weeks.
MEP Harkin says more State support is needed.
