It involves the construction of a maritime and cultural heritage centre, including boat storage, boat building, display, meeting, office, café and ancillary areas.

These would all be served by a new vehicular access, car and bus parking.

The plan was initially refused by county planners in early 2019 and that refusal was later appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

The board also went on to refuse the plan following a decision made in June 2019.

A judicial review was then sought and the board's decision was quashed by order of the High Court in March 2021 and the case was remitted back to the board.

An Bord Pleanála has now approved the project with 14 revised conditions attached.

One states all ecological avoidance measures are to be implemented in full and carried out in accordance with best ecological practice in consultation with statutory agencies.
