Ballinasloe man's case against stepmother over Lotto win begins

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A court case taken by a Ballinasloe man against his stepmother over an alleged claim to a 3.8 million euro Lotto win has started at the High Court.

David Walsh is suing Mary Walsh of Knocknagreena, Ballinasloe for a one-sixth share in the Lotto win from January 22nd 2011.
The 12 euro ticket at the centre of the case was sold at Salmons Department Store at Main Street in Ballinasloe and was one of two winning tickets for the Lotto draw on January 22nd 2011.

The other ticket was sold in Kerry.

David Walsh has told the High Court that he went to the home of his father Peter and stepmother Mary Walsh at Knocnagreena on January 23rd 2011.

He says his father said he had won the lotto and asked his son to sign the back of the winning ticket.

David Walsh claims that Mary Walsh was standing nearby when he signed the ticket and never claimed that she was the owner of the ticket.

According to today's Irish Times, David Walsh claims that his father who passed away later in 2011, his cousin Kevin Black, Mary Walsh and her sons Anthony and Jason Daly were also part of the syndicate.

In the High Court, Justice Richard Humphreys was shown the disputed winning ticket with 6 signatures.

Ms. Walsh claims that David Walsh was given the choice of having 200 thousand euro from the Lotto win or the family home at Knocknagreena.

David Walsh denies he was offered this choice and that after the Lotto win his father and stepmother bought another home and the original home at Knocknagreena was transferred to him.

However he claims he understood he was still going to get one sixth of the Lotto win.

The case continues today.
