Audit on Connemara seaweed harvesting due shortly

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The results of an audit to clarify seaweed harvesting rights in Connemara look set to be finally published in the coming months.

The audit was ordered by the Department of the Environment in 2015 on lands within a mile of the seashore along the length of the county's coastline.

It aims to establish which folios have a right to harvest seaweed - but has faced long-running delays due to the complexity of the work involved.

The matter has been raised at Seanad level by Galway Senator Trevor O' Clochartaigh.

He said the controversial issue has gone very 'dormant' over the past year - and asked what progress is being made to establish the seaweed cutting rights of individual harvesters in Connemara.

Speaking on behalf of the Department, Junior Minister Pat Breen said the results are expected by summer
