Athenry records highest level of rainfall in the country for August

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The highest level of rainfall recorded across the country last month was in Athenry.

That's according to Met Éireann's climate statement for the month of August.

297 millimetres of rain fell in Athenry over the month of August.

The East Galway town also recorded the most "very wet days" in the country - with more than 10 millimetres of rain falling on 11 days last month.

Dublin had the lowest monthly rainfall total of 69 millimetres.

Athenry also experienced the largest deviation from its mean temperature average, compared to the same period in previous years - with a drop of 3 degrees celcius.

The overall mean temperature in August in Athenry was 14.9 degrees celcius.

Elsewhere in Galway, Mace Head had the highest mean wind speeds of the month at 16 knots or 29.6 kilometres per hour.

It also had 3 days with gales - the highest number in the country.

The highest monthly total of sunshine amounted to 190 hours - or 6 hours per day - at Casement in County Dublin.
