From Galway Bay FM newsroom- The Athenry/Oranmore area has the highest demand for social housing in the county.
A meeting of local Councillors has heard there's 756 individuals or families on the housing list in the district.
One reason given for the demand in Athenry and Oranmore is the high number of young people living in both areas.
It was explained that in order to access the Housing Assistance Payment - or HAP - people must join the housing list.
A progress update was given on planned social housing developments and units in the district.
A planned development of 90 social and affordable homes in Claregalway is well advanced with a planning application to be lodged this year.
Plans are also being advanced for 61 social and affordable homes in Athenry, but are still in the early stages.
Council staff also outlined how major efforts are being made to secure turnkey social and affordable homes from developers and the private market.
A number of potential options in Athenry, Claregalway and Oranmore are currently under active consideration.
It was acknowledged that adequate delivery of social homes in 2023 will be difficult - but a firm pipeline is being established to ensure accelerated delivery in 2024 and beyond.
